IT data rethought

10 years of technology partnership between Splunk and Consist

For 10 years now, Consist Software Solutions GmbH has been using the Splunk data platform in projects for IT security and operational intelligence.

Kiel - What has now developed into a success story began for both companies with a kind of pioneering work on the subject of Big Data, which was just picking up speed at the time. About 20 years ago, it was Erik Swan, Rob Das and Michael Baum who recognized the potential of machine data.

Splunk's founders were initially moved by the question of how companies from a wide range of industries get to the bottom of problems in their infrastructure. The companies surveyed agreed that log files, i.e. machine data, were the answer. The manual processing of log files in data centers was often carried out separately in various company departments, which often led to unclear responsibilities or no longer traceable processing in manual scripts.

Thus the idea of a central search engine for IT data was born - the "Google for logfiles". The goal was to provide not only a complete, but also a uniform view of this corporate data. Then, in 2004, the first version of Splunk was launched. The Splunk company grew almost as fast as the volume of data evaluated, which multiplied exponentially.

In 2012, the original log data collection engine had grown into a technology that now also convinced Consist. With the decision to use Splunk on the German market, the Kiel IT company once again proved to be a technology scout for the DACH region. In the first projects, the focus was more on business intelligence. In the meantime, security projects make up the larger part of the area of application for Splunk at Consist's customers.

Whether BI or security, it is always a matter of analyzing, structuring and visualizing large volumes of data and their correlations. Splunk is now a recognized technology leader in many areas of application with a wide variety of automation options. And it is no longer just log files that are searched and analyzed. Rather, any data source can be connected.

The more than 30 Splunk consultants at Consist see unbeatable advantages over comparable technologies in the flexibility of the data platform. Use cases for asset optimization can be integrated just as effectively as use cases in the context of security and compliance.

A brief insight into their work is provided in the brochure specially published for the anniversary.
