A Journey into the World of Big Data
Fast-Paced Hackathon at Consist
During the hackathon on November 6–7, 2025, students first took a spin at the console in the racing game “Forza Motorsport” and then took a closer look at the data behind it. This popular event, now a long-standing tradition, offers valuable insights into the wide range of possibilities in data analytics.
Kiel – On the night of November 6 to 7, 2025, Consist once again hosted its Big Data Hackathon. Students from HAW Kiel (Kiel University of Ap-plied Sciences, formerly FH Kiel) and CAU (Kiel University, Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel) experienced firsthand just how exciting practical data analysis can be.
Participants captured live telemetry data from "Forza Motorsport" by driving their own race laps on site and then analyzed the data using Splunk Enterprise. Splunk is a platform for centralized log management, monitoring, and reporting, based on big data technology. With targeted search queries, meaningful statistics, and detailed reports, participants were able to analyze the racing performance in a variety of ways and answer interesting questions. The result was a fun, hands-on look into the world of Big Data. Prizes were also awarded to the top three finishers.
The event was part of the 33rd Interdisciplinary Weeks at HAW Kiel. Consist once again provided technical guidance, facilities, and catering. The hackathon has been highly popular for many years.
